“Depression on my left. Loneliness on my right. They don’t need to show me their badges. I know these guys very well.”
– Elizabeth Gilbert
Anxiety and depression are the two worst dance partners.
Neither seems to have any idea what rhythm is. Both are vying for your attention, and no one is happy with the song selection.
All the attention it brings to your brain and body is exhausting as you attempt to pull yourself together to make it through the day, pasting a smile on your face hoping to hide the mess underneath.
On the one hand, lying in bed sounds like it’s the only thing you want to do. But, you are terrified that you will forget to do something important that you are convinced will be absolutely devastating.
You definitely don’t want to go to the party and be around all those people, yet you fear what they will say if you don’t show up.
It would be one thing if you were dealing with this occasionally…
… but everyday battles are exhausting.
For some people, it’s hard to even know why you feel this way. You just do. You know it makes little sense, but the thoughts and feelings overwhelm you.
There is also the battle of which is going to show up more that day. Maybe you’ll be able to get yourself looking good, so people think you are doing good. Other days you look like you went on an all-night bender because you just couldn’t shut your mind off.
Maybe you’ve tried to get better, but things still won’t turn around.
Maybe you’ve read every book and blog on the subject.
Maybe you tried the meds, and they just weren’t effective enough.
Maybe you were convinced that you could fake it until you make it.
Maybe you are where you just hate living this nightmare, so you are considering therapy.
Perhaps the idea of seeing a therapist feels daunting. You wonder if the therapist will like you and if they will put up with who you are? Will they even be able to help you? It’s like the list of reasons not to go are plenty, but they aren’t so convincing anymore.
If you have read this far, there is a part of you that is holding on to hope.
When you go to therapy, you can be in a place that accepts all of you. The part of you that is sad and unmotivated. The part of you that is worried about everything. The part of you that is scared.
Being with a well-trained, supportive therapist, you will experience a place where all of you will be cared for. The best part is that however you show up, you will never be a burden. At Green Leaf Counseling, I will help you learn to identify and connect with the emotions you deal with and build your confidence to handle what comes your way.
You deserve to feel good about yourself. Don’t hesitate any longer.
You can list all the ways that therapy won’t work, think about how hard it will be to find a therapist, wonder if you can really afford the therapy, fear a therapist’s judgment… and on and on and on. There are a million ways your anxiety or depression will try to convince you that therapy’s not a good idea.
But if you have read this far, there is a part of you still holding on to hope.
I know you might be worried that there’s no way out of what you’re feeling right now, but maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
