About Therapy

Wherever you’re coming from… welcome!

Maybe you’ve never been to therapy, and all you can think about is lying on a couch while someone asks you about your relationship with your dad.

Have you been to therapy before with… uh… “mixed” results?

Or maybe you’re just trying to get a fresh start with someone new.

This is what therapy’s all about. It’s about having a safe place to explore who you are, where you have been, and where you want to go.

Here’s how we’ll get to know each other…

Getting started…

First, we will find a time to have a brief phone call, about 15 minutes max.

While we chat, I’ll ask a little about you and what is going on in your life. It’s also a time to ask me questions about what I do and how I approach things.

After that, if you feel comfortable about working together, we will schedule a time for us to have our first session, either in-person or online, through a secure video chat.

When we have a time scheduled, you will receive an email from me with a link to provide me with more information about you, with a couple of forms to sign. It’s all done online, so you don’t have to worry about printing and carrying around papers.

When we meet…

If we meet in person, I will shoot you a text a little before you arrive to help you find your way up to the office space. I’ll then meet you in the office lobby or out in the hallway.

We will meet in one of our practice’s spaces (I share space with some other excellent therapists). Yes, we have couches. No, you don’t have to lie down on them… unless you want to.

If we are meeting online, you will get an email from me before our session that links to our private, HIPPA-compliant video platform. You will just need a computer or tablet with a working camera, microphone, and a good Internet connection. Also, a nice quiet space will benefit us both when we meet.

Our first session together…

… allows you to expand on some things that you’ve already shared with me. You are free to share what you want. If you aren’t sure what to say, I’ll ask some questions to help us along.

Though I will get to know a lot about you when we talk, what is important is that you feel that we can have a relationship that will help you work through whatever you bring.

You’ll be free to share anything.

You’ll get feedback to help you along.

You will be heard and understood.

Toward the end of our session, we’ll take a breath, slow down, and you’ll be able to express how you felt our time went for you. If you feel like more time together will benefit you, we will meet again at the same time and day the next week.

Working out stuff in therapy is a skill, and getting good takes repetition.

An occasional effort to build your skills just doesn’t pan out very often. With that said, repetition in therapy means doing it every week.

This will allow you and your body to learn how to be vulnerable in a safe space. It also allows us to build a relationship that will help you become the person you want to be.

As we fall into the repetition, you won’t have to be busy trying to bring “material” to discuss. Instead, it will naturally find us as we meet.

This will help you to live out what you experience in the room with me organically. You can go out living in the real world with more confidence and compassion yourself… while being more aware of your body and emotions throughout each day.

About Me

My path to becoming a counselor…

… began when I hit some roadblocks in my life. And, man, did it suck. It was then that I got help for myself. I saw a therapist.

The experience changed me for the better. My therapy experience inspired me to get my master’s degree in counseling to take what I already was doing with others to the next level.

At the core of it all, I love people.

This is what energizes me to work with people every day.

Giving people a place where they can be themselves (the good and not so good selves) and still feel cared for… that’s what it’s all about for me.

A little about me outside the office…

I was born and raised here in Kansas City. I lived in some other places after college, but there is no place like home.

I’m a dad of two wonderful kids. They bring an immense amount of joy to my life, and I bring an immense amount of dad-jokes to their lives. (I’m not sure who benefits more.)

I like sports, hiking, enjoying nature, cooking food of all types, and building a general knowledge of mostly useless skills for daily living.
